Our character theory is “New relationships with characters change depending on the situation”.
Example one: In the story “Thirteen and a Half”, the girl (name not included) has to deal with Ashley and her emotions when her pet bird, Sweet Pea, dies, and the main character also has to deal with the awkward situation when Ashley finds out that Sweet Pea was a series of replacement birds. The problem was solved when the girl had the funeral with Ashley for the bird.
Example two: In the story, “In Your Hat”, the relationship between Dennis and Ariel share a slightly friendly relationship until Dennis asks Ariel for help with his book report. The relationship starts to go downhill in the following events after Dennis asks Ariel for the story that she “read”. Then, the event that changes the relationship completely is when Dennis finds out that Ariel made up the story that she gave Dennis.
Example three: In the story “Squid Girl”, the main character has a relationship with Bob (formerly known as Travis) that constantly changes with the events that take place in the story. When she sees Bob, she thinks that he really likes her. But she keeps getting dragged away by her nature-loving parents. As the events in the book progress, she and Bob have a relationship that changes quickly. The relationship that is at the lowest point is when she shares her squid knowledge with Bob, and she thinks that he hates her. But in the end, the situation that really helps the relationship to be better is when Bob appreciates the girl’s knowledge of squids, making them friends.
Example four: In the story “Thirteen and a Half”, the character, Ashley, and the unnamed Main character have a relationship that slowly becomes more concrete. In the beginning of the story, the Main character’s only relation with Ashley is that they sit next to each other in math class. As the story and the events progress, she and Ashley become closer friends. When Ashley’s bird, Sweat Pea, dies, the main character loosely understands how Ashley feels, and during the bird funeral, they become solid friends.
Example five: In the story “Squid Girl”, the girl does not like her parents in te beginning because she is annoyed that they are aborting her opportunities to be with Bob. She also does not realize what the information that her parents hae taught her will lead to. But, as the situation with Bob comes to the point where his brother calls her “squid girl”, she finds out that the information her parents taught her was actually worthwhile, and she really starts to love her parents more.
