Explanation
of technique
The technique is using something confusing, like when there
is a quote or idea that doesn't make sense. The other side of the technique is
using ambiguity, like when there is two ways a situation can go. Also there
could be many ways to make a mystery make sense like when Johnny has an idea
that doesn't make sense, to turn himself in.
Make technique genius
What makes this technique so genius is that the quote is missing a part, which makes the reader more interested to see what happens next? The quote is missing why Johnny wants to turn himself in all of a sudden. S.E Hinton makes the reader want to reader more by leaving out information. If she didn't do this the reader wouldn't read on.
Quote
Johnny had been quite, finishing his fifth barbecue sandwich, but now he announced: “We’re goin’ back and turn ourselves in.”
It was Dally’s turn to gag. Then he swore awhile. Then he turned to Johnny and demanded “What?”
“I said, we’re goin’ back and turn ourselves in,” Johnny repeated in a very soft voice. I was surprised, but not shocked. I had thought of turning ourselves in lots of times, but apparently the whole idea was a jolt to Dallas. (87)
In the under lined statement, why would Johnny want to turn himself in all of a sudden? He worked so hard to run away from the cops. One, he cut his hair then died it, so people didn't notice him. Two he ran away and hid from them. Also I am confused about why he would want to do that, did he have a change in idea all of a sudden or something like that.
How To use The strategy
1. First you have to read the quote that is confusing
2. Then you underline the words that are confusing or do not make sense
3. The last step you do is writing two things about the underline sentence or phrase that is on different sides like happy and sad.
