Explanation of Character Theory:
Our character theory is when a round character has a counterpart or special object that enhances his/her traits
and they don’t have to have a special relationship.
This means when a character has something or someone that shows what they are really like. Their traits are being brought out with this object or this person.
Five Pieces of Evidence:
1. In a line from Squid Girl, “you must find a way to walk down the beach and ‘bump inoto’ Travis. This represents that Tessa, aka Squid Girl, is very sneaky because her parents don’t want her to go on the beach because of her bad sun burn. So, in order to see Travis, Tessa is willing to actually do something with her mom.
2. In a line from Squid Girl, “Bob? Well, it’s not Travis, but it’ll definitely do.” This represents that Tessa is surprised because Tessa at first didn’t know his name. So, Squid Girl gave him a name, Travis. When she really finds out that his name is Bob she was surprised because she thought of this really nice name but in the end it’s just Bob.
3. In the line from Thirteen and a Half, “Ashley stopped screaming, said, ‘Sweet Pea… died!’ and started to sob.” This shows that Ashley is sensitive. She is sensitive because she really cares for her bird and when she died it really hurt her inside. Death is not a good thing and to Ashley, it really affected her.
4. Thirteen and a Half supports the idea that a character has a counterpart or special object that brings out his/her traits. During the funeral of Sweet Pea, Ashley told the main character to say a few words and this is what she said, "'Okay. Sweet Pea? Um, I never really knew you, you know alive, but, and I don't really know Ashley that well either--I can't figure out is she is severely weird or, like, the opposite--but, um, I think she really, kind of, loved you.'... 'So,'... 'I was thinking maybe it would be nice if you could, like, maybe show up in her dream some night and fly with her. Because Ashley likes to imagine she's flying. Anyway, um, that's all.'" In this part of the story the main character is feeling very awkward and like she is not in the right place.
5.Thirteen And A Half: "I was still standing there, holding my half-eaten Mallomar, feeling a little weird." I think this proves our theory that a main character has a counterpart or a special object that enhances his/her characteristics (but they don't necessarily have to have a good relationship) because it shows that Ashley crying and sort of ignoring her is making her feel really weird and uncomfortable.
