During the past few weeks our group have been exploring the goals that most main characters want to reach. The character theory that our group explored is: “Main characters always have a goal that they are trying to reach, but don’t always reach it without change.”
We read many short stories in class that support our character theory, and some examples are:
From In Your Hat by Ellen Conford

- "I'd been trying to get Ariel Greenbanks to notice me for almost two years now, and the results had been grim to none.” This quote is evidence because Dennis the narrator has a goal that is to try to get Ariel Greenbanks to notice him. that he is trying to reach. Also, dennis has been trying to reach that goal for almost two years. Finally, this is why this quote is evidence to my character theory (12)
- "...an emergency book report" due the next day and he needed immediate help. This quote is evidence that Dennis had a goal to write and finish his book report. He has also been handing the same book report idea for the past many years. So, this year, he decided to actually do one (the book report "cops" had caught up with him...) but sadly, in the end, it doesn't go his way. After he was helped by his crush, he is almost certain that he's going to get an A. But, sadly, in the end, it didn't go that way. This quote is evidence to my group's character theory because it showed a goal that Dennis is trying to reach, but in the end, it sadly doesn't go that way for him (12).
- From Squid Girl by Todd Strasser
- "This calls for extreme action. Despite your mosquito blotches and recent sea- turtle blunder, you must find a way to walk down the beach and 'bump into' Travis." Sierra has a goal of trying to get Travis , a cute boy, to notice her. She is desperate to find a way and will probably do anything. This is evidence to my character theory because the main character has a goal of trying to get Travis to notice her. In conclusion, the main character, Sierra has a goal to get the cute boy, Travis to notice her, this is a goal she is trying to reach (218).
- "This calls for extreme emergency action... bump into Travis". The goal that he wants to do is to bump into Travis and make travis think she is not weird. She did eventually bump into travis, but travis thinks she is weird (218).
- "He is tall, dark, and may or may not be cute. Even with the binoculars, he is too far away to really tell. But now you have hop. And a plan." Sierra's goal is to meet this boy and hopefully, get him to like her. During the story, things weren't looking so good for Sierra and "Travis", supporting our character theory... But at the end, they end up hanging out with each other. Which doesn't entirely support our theory. But Sierra still had a goal and the will to reach it.(214)
- From Thirteen and a Half by Rachel Vail
- "'She was telling me that when she grows up, she wants to be a veterinarian and a movie star and travel all over the world very glamorously and live life to the hilt.'" This quote demonstrates our character theory because it shows what Ashley wants to be when she grows up, and how she will succeed in achieving her life goals. As you can see, this quote creatively reveals that Ashley wants to be successful in life and to do. So, she has to think positively and work productively to reach her goal. Even though she has struggles in life may bring her down, she will get back on her feet and try again! (75)
