Our theory is, every character has obstacles or a conflict to overcome that changes the way they think or feel about things. This makes the story more compelling or interesting.

We think the these sentences, "Sweet Pea?” she called heading across the thick rug toward an empty birdcage. 'Sweet pea? Ahhhh!', supports our character theory because its a conflict that was surprising, therefore impacts the story.
“‘There was more than on replacement?’ The mom smiled awkwardly. ‘Sweet pea was sort of a series of birds.’" This also supports our character theory because this is a conflict that makes the story more interesting , since she finds out ”her bird" wasn't the only bird. This impacts her feelings towards her mom.
"Because it's spring vacation and your tree-hugging organic-fruit-and-nut-case parents have dragged you across several long boring time zones via two airplanes, one smelly boat, and a tooth losing Jeep ride so that the three of you can spend a week squeezed into a bug-infested island. According to the tree huggers, you are here to hike and snorkel and get back in touch with nature." This conflict in the short story Squid Girl by Todd Strasser takes you into a 13 year old girls vacation. Now, this isn't a normal vacation that you would image a vacation to be.
