Our character and plot theories are:
"A plot that foreshadows and has unexpected plot twists are better than stories that don't." for a plot.
"A character that has surprises the reader is more thought provoking than one that doesn't." for a character.
Our evidence is:
(From In Your Hat) I think the sentence(s), "Finally Mr. Frazetti stood at my desk. He thrust the report at me.'Really, Mr. Murphy,' he said... 'F as in FAKE!! Do you think I'm an idiot?'... What did he mean? What was fake? How could he possibly know that I hadn't really read the book? How could he know that Ariel had told me that story? I think this supports the trait "A character that surprises is better than one that doesn't". I think that because I would have expected that he would have gotten an A and Ariel and him would live happily ever after (Sounds like a Disney movie). Instead I found that Ariel tricked Dennis and that there is no such thing as Madame de Maupassant. Also, instead of an A, Mr. Frazetti gave him an F.
(From Thirteen and a Half) "'Ashley,' said the mom. 'Sweet pea wasn't actually, well, what think he is. Or was... You didn't get this bird on your third birthday.'" I was surprised with this because I didn't expect this to happen. I expected Sweet Pea to be one bird and not a series of birds... This supports our theory.
(From Thirteen and a Half) "'Sweet Pea? Ahhh!' I got there as she began screaming, and I saw a dead bird, lying on its side at the bottom of the cage." This surprised Ashley because she was in shock that she saw her bird dead lying on the floor. It wowed her socks off.
(From Thirteen and a Half) "'It feels... it just feels like, like the death of my childhood."' This supports the character theory because she is very sad and depressed in this quote.
(From Thirteen and a Half) "The mom smiled awkwardly. 'Sweet Pea was sort of a series of birds."' It was very surprising because the mom sorta just appeared and gave a giant plot twist then left. Pathetic mom. I was not expecting that.
EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED!!!!!!
