Explanation of technique: When a writer uses one word that a character has a particular feeling about to explain what the character's emotion is, without going into great detail.
Why is this so GENIUS: S.E. Hinton doesn't give away the character's feeling. She uses one word, and repeats it. Each time you see the word, the emotion grows on you, and you feel more connected to the character.
How can others use this technique?: Step one - Look through your piece of writing, and find an emotional part
Step two - remove (a) word(s) that show emotion and replace it with a more meaningful one
Step three - look further into your story, where you would like to show the emotion again
Step five - enjoy how people 'wow' at your amazing work
